A big inland school-holiday loop

The supplied GPX starts and finishes in Brisbane and records a 3,621-kilometre loop through inland New South Wales. The main stops captured in the route and photos include Dubbo, Narrandera, Hay, Mungo National Park, Ivanhoe and Wellington.

Event report

The sort of trip where the distance becomes part of the story

School holidays gave us a good excuse to load the car and head inland. We spent time around Dubbo and the zoo, then continued through Narrandera and Hay before the country really opened up on the run to Mungo.

Mungo was the standout for me. The old shearing shed, rusted machinery and the formations at the Walls of China felt completely different to the earlier stops. From there we worked back through Ivanhoe and Wellington, mixing the longer driving days with railway history, gardens, the caves and plenty of smaller stops along the way.

By the time we rolled back into Brisbane, the GPX had recorded just over 3,600 kilometres. It was a big family loop, but the mix of wildlife, old towns, open country and the stops we found along the way made it a road trip worth remembering.
